Influenza Prevention 2009-2010
This page we will provide you with links to the CDC and other current state or local agencies regarding the Flu virus.
We will also provide you with our current vaccine supply information and our recommendations regarding the use of these vaccines.
Seasonal injectable flu vaccine is currently in low stock for all children and adults (6 months of age and above). Our vaccine for children 6 - 35 months of age is all preservative free and we have some selected doses that are preservative free for all others (preferred for use in pregnant women and young children). Most of our remaining vaccine for children 3 years of age to adults does contain preservative as we received the week of 11/12/2009 our last 50 doses of vaccine for children and adults 3 years of age and older and will give these out on a first come, first serve basis to our high risk patients and parents. We have a dwindling supply of vaccine for that we are distributing on a first come, first serve basis to our patients only.
We have run out of doses of Flumist, the Intranasal Seasonal Live Virus Flu Vaccine for children and adults age 2 years and above (this is not for people with asthma or other chronic health conditions).
Seasonal flu vaccine for children who are underinsured, not insured or CHIPs patients (Vaccine for Children) is also now in low stock.
We received an abundant amount of H1N1 Pandemic Nasal Flu Vaccine in stock and started administering these 10/15/09 on a first come, first serve basis. With the 10/28/09 shipment, we received a healthy amount of H1N1 Pandemic Nasal Flu Vaccine , which can only be used by people 2 years to 49 years of age, otherwise healthy, not pregnant, without a history of asthma or chronic respiratory illness. It is the live version of the vaccine which can cause mild flu illnesses in up to 5% of people receiving the vaccine. It is passed along in breast milk, so it should be used with caution in nursing moms. We have resumed giving this to patients and family members now and will continue as long as we have enough for our patients who request it (our patients are the priority when vaccine supplies run low).
Tuesday 11/12/09 we received more of the H1N1 Pandemic Injectable Flu Vaccine for all children 6 months of age up to adults. We received injectable vaccine that does contain thimeresol and some that is preservative free for those who request it (young children and pregnant women). We will start administering this on a first come, first serve basis for our high risk patients only for now. We will resume vaccinating parents of high risk patients when we receive more vaccine.
We will be ordering more vaccines weekly, per Texas State Department of Health policy, but do not know when we will receive any more and what vaccine we will get.
The most updated recommendations for this are available at the websites listed above. We will update this page as we get more vaccines in stock. We will provide flu vaccine to patients and high risk parents on a first come, first serve basis.
